Shopping in Jakarta: From Branded High Fashion Products to Knickknacks and Souvenirs

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Jakarta? One of the biggest cities in South East Asia? One of the most populous cities in Asia? One of the most congested cities in the world? A busy city with bustling streets with street hawkers on almost every corner? All of them are true and correct. But do you also know that Jakarta is a haven for shoppers? From branded fashion products to handcrafted knickknacks, you can find almost anything in Jakarta’s shopping centers. We will guide to you the best places to shop while you are vacationing in Jakarta.

One of the best places for shopping in Jakarta is Tanah Abang Market. It is also one of the biggest markets in Jakarta. Located nearby the Tanah Abang train station, Tanah Abang is home to thousands of local vendors selling various kinds of items from textile, fashion, bags, shoes, and many more. What’s even more interesting is that because all the products are sold at a relatively low price compared to the ones you find at the shopping malls. But of course, you can get an even lower price if you are good at haggling.

Besides Tanah Abang Market, Jakarta also has Mangga Dua Trade Center. Located in the northern part of Jakarta, Mangga Dua area is not merely a shopping district; it is now one of the 12 coastal tourism spots in north Jakarta zone. The Mangga Dua area hosts several trade centers that offer wide range of products including apparels, household items, electronic devices, computers, mobile phones, automotive products, and even knickknacks and souvenirs. Just like Tanah Abang, the stores in Mangga Dua offer their products in a relatively low price. But remember, the art of haggling is necessary in order to get even lower price.

Now let’s move to Pasar Baru, the center for vintage and preloved items. Located in the Sawah Besar district of Central Jakarta, Pasar Baru was established in the year of 1820. It is considered as one of the oldest market in Jakarta. Some people still even write the name as Passer Baroe, using the old-spelling Bahasa Indonesia. Apart from the vintage products that you can buy in a relatively cheap price, you can also enjoy the Dutch heritage from the old design and architecture of the market itself.

If you are more into well-displayed products and browsing shelves without dripping with sweat, then Jakarta also has shopping malls for you to roam about. Jakarta and its surrounding has more than 50 malls to cater you with your shopping needs. Some of the biggest ones include Pondok Indah Mall, Gandaria City Mall, Pacific Place, and Kota Kasablanka in South Jakarta; Grand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia, Senayan City Mall, and Plaza Senayan in Central Jakarta; Central Park Mall, Taman Anggrek Mall, and Neo Soho in West Jakarta; and Kelapa Gading Mall, Mall of Indonesia, and La Piazza in North Jakarta. These malls will quench your thirst of shopping through their numerous premium shops selling branded and quality products.

Apart from branded high fashion products, you can also buy souvenirs and traditional handicrafts in some of the malls in Jakarta. You can go to Alun-Alun Indonesia at Grand Indonesia to get high quality products ranging from batik apparels, shoes, accessories, ornaments, to everyday sundries. You can also go to Sarinah Department Store, also dubbed as “The Indonesian Emporium”, to get the same selection at lower price.

So, the next time you’re visiting Jakarta, don’t forget to prepare some extra space in your luggage and some extra days for your shopping!
